Through direct sponsorships and the Selfreliance Foundation, each year we gift over $1 million through donations, scholarships, and volunteer hours to local community organizations. Building better lives and stronger communities is at the core of what we stand for. Join us in our endeavor to enrich our communities!
We are member owned and member run. As a not-for-profit we pour the profits back into our member community in the form of better rates and additional benefits for you. We want our impact to be felt by our members- from helping people manage debt through financial literacy, to supporting access to capital for small businesses and community non-profits.
Gain access to lower loan rates and higher savings rates
Because you are part owner, we are interested in making you richer. We monitor the lending market regularly, and you will find that our loan rates are lower than national average for auto loans and for mortgages. And it’s generally easier to obtain a loan with a credit union than a larger impersonal bank. You can also make more on your deposits. See how much you can save.
Enjoy friendly service in branches, or bank virtually from anywhere
Our business is very much local, but our technical capabilities are far reaching. Our digital banking tools offer the freedom for you to bank from anywhere anytime, while our network of 62,000 ATMs is larger than that of top three US banks combined and provides you with fee free access to cash. You can also visit our branches conveniently located around Chicagoland, Detroit area and central New Jersey, or complete a transaction via our call center.

Misconceptions About Credit Unions
Many people believe that they do not qualify for membership. At Selfreliance FCU, you can join the Selfreliance Association with a donation of $5 and become a member of our credit union.
Banks and credit unions accounts are insured for the same amount of money, $250,000. The difference is the branch of the government that insures your deposits. Credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration or NCUA.
Loans and deposit accounts
A common misconception is that credit unions do not offer as many competitive products as banks. This couldn’t be further from the truth. At Selfreliance, we can help you with your next mortgage, car loan, credit card, certificate of deposit and more financial services.
Non-profit vs. not-for-profit
Credit unions are not-for-profits, not non-profits. Credit unions reinvest their profits in their members, competitive services they provide, and give back to the community and its organizations.
